Symphonette ends season with Sunday concert
The Poway Community Symphonette, an offshoot of the Poway Community Symphony Orchestra that focuses on chamber music, will hold its last concert of the 2010 season at 4 p.m. this Sunday (June 6) at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 16889 Espola Road in Poway.
Like the larger orchestra, the symphonette is presented by Poway Adult School and is meant to give experienced musicians an outlet to keep playing in their adult lives and to give the community an opportunity to enjoy classical music close to home.
The concert will include the “Concertino for String Orchestra” by Hindemith; the “Concerto for Two Violins” by Vivaldi; performances by violin soloists Marcia Yee and Marcelene Mansour; a troika from “Lt. Kije” by Prokofiev; “Sabre Dance” by Khachaturian; and the “Toy Symphony” by Haydn. The concert is free, though donations are accepted.
Symphonette conductor Ulli Reiner said she likes to give the audience history about the music with each introduction that she makes. She provides tips for listening to the music and gives insight into what motivated the composers when they were writing their work.
“In these days, conductors have to relate more to their audiences,” she said. “I think audiences crave for more than just musical performances. They want to learn something and they want something deeper as well.”
She added that because it’s the final concert of the season, the performance will also include a fun performance of Haydn’s “Toy Symphony,” which uses toy birds and percussion instruments, which will be played by middle school students from the orchestras at Bernardo Heights and Twin Peaks middle schools.
“It’s going to feature house finches and sparrows and a cuckoo,” Reiner said, adding that she bought toy models from the Audubon Society. “They have music to read which tells them exactly when to press the button and make the birds sing. It’s just such a unique piece that Haydn created.”
