Couple helps homeowners upgrade rooms

With the current economy where household budgets are tight, homeowners might be more inclined to upgrade their existing homes rather than buy new ones.

That’s where businesses like Rancho Kitchen and Baths, Inc. fit in. The family-owned Poway business specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodels, with a focus on inland corridor homes, such as in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Scripps Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos.

While consumers are still buying new homes, some prefer to stay put to keep their roots, maintain their current level of property taxes, and — in the Inland Corridor — have their children get a quality education in Poway Unified School District schools.
For those homeowners, remodeling might be the answer to improve their quality of life.

“They’re sort of creating the home they want with what they already have,” said Rancho Kitchen and Baths co-owner Tina Spork.

Located at 12245 Poway Road in Oak Knoll Plaza, Rancho Kitchen and Baths is owned and operated by the husband-and-wife team Dave and Tina Spork. The 1,500-square-foot showroom features sample kitchens and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. The phone number is 858-748-3300.

The Sporks, who opened Rancho Kitchen and Baths in 2003, tout their hands-on style and constant communication with customers. It’s such an important part of their business that when they had the opportunity to grow in 2006, they decided against it to maintain their level of customer service.

“Instead of expanding, we became more specialized. We stayed small because there would be more of a disconnect if we got bigger,” said Tina Spork.

Depending on size, projects usually take four to six weeks to complete. Not only is contractor Dave Spork heavily involved in the planning process, he said, but he also presents construction timelines to clients and is on the job or talking with the customer every day without unnecessary delays.

“You know exactly what you’re getting because I’m there,” Dave Spork said, noting he uses his own crews who have worked for him for years. The business also does its own electrical and plumbing work, he said.

The business also helps customers design their dream kitchens and bathrooms, even taking clients on shopping field trips. They help customers budget, letting them know which aspects of the remodel to prioritize and which areas to cut back on depending on their needs. For instance, some like to entertain in their kitchen but don’t do a lot of heavy cooking.

“We’re very customer-friendly and hands-on,” said Tina Spork. “Usually people know what they want…but they need to be pointed in the right direction.”

Payment isn’t collected until after the work is done. Rancho Kitchen and Baths recently started taking Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards, in response to customers who said they’ve been frustrated with the wait involved with applying for lines of credit through banks.

Rancho Kitchen and Baths further aims to keep costs low for clients by passing along its supplier prices for materials, such as hardware, tile, granite and more.
The business carries three cabinet lines: DeWils Cabinets, Dynasty Omega Cabinets and Canyon Creek. These lines embrace environmentally friendly, or “green” methods, such as formaldehyde-free construction, which is a concern with young families, Tina Spork said.
