Campaign will raise money for Poway Days parade, picnic
Sue Herndon and Sharon Cafagna are putting together their calling lists to attract sponsors for the 2010 Poway Days Heritage Parade and Old-Fashioned Picnic.
Don’t be surprised if they come a callin’, knockin’ or e-mailin’, because they are passionate about infusing a love for their community into Poway Days, which kicks off with the parade and picnic on Saturday, Sept. 18
Considered a combined event, the duo is volunteering to help raise $30,000 to underwrite the activities.
This will be the 46th year for the parade, which almost vanished last year, until Sabrina Butler rallied others to breathe life into it.
She established the nonprofit Poway Community Association and organized volunteers to assist with all the planning, calling and logistics of putting together a parade.
“She was amazing,” Herndon, a local Realtor said. “She started in July and it was ready to go in September.”
Herndon jumped in because she always loved the parade and could not think of Poway without it, she said.
Meanwhile, Cafagna thinks back to numerous times when she and her late husband, Mickey, rode in the parade and waved to everyone.
“Mickey would want me to be involved in this,” she said. “With Sue helping, it’s fun.”
New this year will be the picnic in Poway Community Park after the 9 a.m. parade concludes about 11 a.m.
Those who contribute to either event will essentially help the community, Herndon said.
“We’ll find a niche to fit their budget,” she said. “Their sponsorship will not only help the community, but the higher the donation, the better the parade placement.”
The following sponsorships are available: title sponsor, $5,000; presenting sponsor, $2,500; platinum sponsor, $1,000; gold sponsor, $500; and silver sponsor, $250.
All top sponsors will get preferential placement in the parade; grandstand seating; sponsor’s name mentioned during parade; name on posters, T-shirts and logo on PCA website; passes to parade VIP breakfast; and other recognition.
Smaller donations will gladly be accepted, Herndon said.
