Dead man identified as Poway retiree

(CNS) – A Poway man found dead in a burning car parked in a San Pasqual-area dirt lot was officially identified today.

Leroy McDowell, 68, was found in the driver’s seat of a charred Hyundai Sonata in the 14200 block of Highland Valley Road in northern San Diego shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, according to police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office. McDowell was a retired San Marcos school administrator.

Due to the suspicious circumstances of the fatality, homicide detectives were called in to investigate.

“This is not a vehicle accident,” SDPD Lt. Ernie Herbert told reporters at the scene of the blaze. “It looks like it was on fire for a reason, but we just don’t know yet why.”

McDowell was identified via dental records. The cause of his death remains on hold pending further postmortem tests, officials said.
