Poway center offers holistic health approach

Managing health and wellness without medication is the focus of Better Health and Wellness Center of Poway.

The center offers a holistic approach to preventative care and treatment. The physical component of a person’s health is addressed through methods such as chiropractic treatment, massage and acupuncture. Additionally, the center’s drug-free approach looks at internal factors like hormones, mental and emotional stress, and toxicity.

“We really focus on getting to the underlying cause of a condition,” said Clinic Director LeiLani Vidal, the chiropractor who opened Better Health and Wellness Center in January 1993 and continues to own and operate it.

The center sees a range of patients, including kids diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and women looking to balance their hormones naturally. Men also seek treatment for issues such as low back pain. Scoliosis in youth and adults is also frequently seen.

Treatment plans are customized to patients, and they’re given options for which route they want to pursue, said Vidal.

“It’s definitely not a cookie cutter approach. Everyone is different,” she said.

For example, the center’s medication-free approach to ADHD involves screening for allergies, toxicities and physical stress. What’s often the case is these children have underlying food allergies, misaligned vertebrae or metal toxicity, Vidal said. In addition to addressing these physical aspects, the center may refer patients to a music therapist to help with behavioral issues.

The center also offers natural approaches to dieting. Toxicity is a big cause of obesity and foggy thinking, Vidal noted, and the center offers nutritional cleaning to get rid of chemical toxicity in the body. There’s also a diet program focused on the HCG hormone, headed by a naturopath doctor.

The center also offers beauty services such as lash extensions, facials, and more. Vidal, who is also a licensed esthetician and a master lash stylist, addresses beauty issues from a health perspective: for instance, adult acne is treated by examining food allergy and hormonal imbalances.

Not just reserved to helping those who walk through clinic doors, the center also does local outreach, offering free health screenings for issues such as high blood pressure, bone density, thyroid and adrenal gland function.
Free screenings are also available at the center’s health fair, which is every two months on site, with the next in September. There is no cost for the fair, though donations are accepted for the charity Feeding America.

The center also regularly offers educational workshops at local libraries and businesses, discussing topics such as ADHD, sleep problems, digestion, fibromyalgia, and more. The lectures are led by the center’s experts, which include a nutritionist, physical therapist, acupuncturist, holistic health practitioner, and more. An upcoming trigger point workshop on Aug. 23 will help couples learn how to massage each other.

A schedule of free classes is available online at the center’s website, www.BHWC-Poway.com. To sign up, call the center at 858-679-5544.

“We like to present in a format that is easy to understand,” said Vidal, noting the center is a part of the national non-profit Foundation for Wellness Professionals, which encourages its members to volunteer health care workshops and screenings to the community.

Prices are average, and discounts and financing are available, Vidal said. Poway Unified School District employees get services for half-price, and seniors also have a low discount.

Better Health and Wellness Center is located at 12455 Poway Road, Suite G. The phone number is 858-679-5544. The website is www.BHWC-Poway.com.
