Poway, RB field hockey teams looking to gain ground

As far as field hockey goes, the Palomar League may be among the toughest leagues in San Diego County this year.

In addition to Poway and Rancho Bernardo, the league features Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, Rancho Buena Vista and Westview.

League matches are set to begin later this month. For its first league challenge, Rancho Bernardo is traveling to Torrey Pines on Thursday, Oct. 7, while Poway will start its league schedule on Friday, Oct. 8 by hosting Rancho Buena Vista.

Del Norte to face Westview after first varsity football win

The Del Norte High School Nighthawks have earned their first varsity football ‘W’ in school history after defeating Escondido’s Calvin Christian 28-14 last Friday (Sept. 17).

Girls tennis: Competition is tough in new Palomar League

Talk about a tough schedule.

When it comes to girls tennis, the Palomar League might as well be called “The League of Champions.”

Due to the realignment of sports leagues, the new configuration of the Palomar League features the defending Division I CIF San Diego Section Champion, Torrey Pines, as well as Mt. Carmel, the defending champion in Division II.

Poway man found dead in burned home identified

The body of a 73-year-old Poway man found Thursday in his fire-damaged home with a gun shot wound has now been identified as that of Valentine Derkach, who lived in the 13000 block of Robley Ranch Road.

Authorities have determined that Derkach did not meet with foul play, but reportedly committed suicide, according to Jennifer Thompson, an investigator with the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office.

Woman dies in Rancho Bernardo accident

An 82-year-old woman died in a Rancho Bernardo traffic accident as she was leaving the Village (Albertsons) Shopping Center Thursday afternoon.

Officer Frank Cali said the unidentified woman “drove straight across four lanes of Rancho Bernardo Road into a drainage ditch.”

The accident at 12475 Rancho Bernardo Road occurred shortly before noon and did not involve any other vehicles, he said.

San Diego North launches ‘junior’ chamber for students

High school students interested in business can get a first-hand look through a new organization.

San Diego North Chamber of Commerce has recently founded a junior chamber for students. Membership dues are $25 per year.

It is open to students throughout the regional chamber’s boundaries, including high schools within Poway Unified School District. Everyone should stand for pledge

I am an elementary school teacher in Poway and I think it is outrageous that one family can complain so much that schools need to change their policy about the wording of the pledge announcement. My school was required to do this because of one family who did not like their child to be required to say the pledge because the word “God” is recited.

I can say that I am not the only teacher at my school who is bothered by children sitting during the Pledge of Allegiance
