RB High losing lacrosse, volleyball coaches

Rancho Bernardo High School will be losing two of its head coaches come spring.

Lacrosse coach Bruce Seitz and volleyball coach Rachael Grant Dixon won’t be returning this school year.

Seitz has been a lacrosse coach at Rancho Bernardo for 12 years — 10 as head coach. He said he’s stepping down because his job duties have changed and won’t leave him time to work with the program.

Seitz said he enjoyed his time coaching the club sport at RB High when it was still new to the area.

“We’d play in old football jerseys and we lacked school support,” Seitz said. “Through the years I built the program and it got more respect and support.”

This past year, the squad had a record of 9-6 overall and 5-3 in league play. In the championship, they got to the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by Poway High.

In 2005, the Broncos were the CIF San Diego Section runners-up.

Also leaving RB High will be Grant Dixon, who has been the head coach of the boys squad for four years and has been with the school for seven years.

Grant Dixon said she’s taking at least a year off from coaching to pursue new opportunities in the area of sports psychology, her field of expertise.

She will be teaching at National University and UC San Diego.

She will also be holding a workshop designed for the parents of student athletes from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the high school. The event is a fundraiser for the Rancho Bernardo High School Foundation, with the $15 admission going to individual sports programs at the school Titled “The Psychology of Sports,” the workshop will introduce parents to basic concepts of sports psychology that they can use to set goals, handle adversity and compete. She said she will be holding a similar workshop in the spring. For information, email dangrant@rocketmail.com.

Grant Dixon led the Broncos to the Division I CIF championship game three times, most recently in 2009.

“I can sum up my experience at RB with three words,” Grant Dixon said. “I loved it.”

Athletic Director Peggy Brose said she has already received many applications from people interested in coaching the lacrosse team. She said she expects to make a decision soon, so she is only accepting applications until this Friday (Sept. 3).

She said the application period to fill the volleyball spot will take longer.

“We’re just going to look for people who fit with our philosophy of coaching and work hard to improve on two very successful programs that have a lot of returning players,” Brose said.

Anyone interested in the open positions should e-mail Brose at pbrose@powayusd.com.
