Arrest made in Poway bank robbery

A suspect in Thursday afternoon’s robbery at Chase Bank in Poway was arrested Thursday night in Ocean Beach by San Diego Police Department detectives.

The suspect, Colter Stanley Johnson, 25, could be linked to two “skateboard bandit” robberies in San Diego, accordingto authorities.

Lt. Tony Giamarrino at the Poway Sheriff’s station said that his agency shared information Thursday with San Diego police that the suspect possibly lived in San Diego.

Johnson was stopped about 8:50 p.m. on Thursday while he was driving in the Point Loma Heights area, according to watch commander Sgt. Joseph Steffen with San Diego Police. The driver matched the description in the Poway robbery and detectives reportedly found a skateboard in his vehicle, Steffen said.

Robbery detectives are working with the FBI to determine if the suspect now in custody is linked to two previous bank holdups by the “skateboard bandit,” according to a San Diego Police Department spokesman.

The bandit in the Wells Fargo Bank incident on July 23 carried his skateboard with him when he robbed that Torrey Highlands branch at 7875 Highland Village Road, said FBI and police officials.

According to a report released after the incident, the robber demanded money and displayed a handgun as he lifted his shirt.

The FBI has surveillance tapes that show the bandit carrying his skateboard, and dressed in dark clothing with a green bandana masking his face.

A man fitting the same description as in the July 23 robbery is suspected of an earlier robbery on July 12 at the Coamerica Bank, 3312 Rosecrans St. in San Diego, according to an FBI report.
