Authorities ID Poway woman killed in accident
The 50-year-old Poway woman killed Sunday when she lost control of her bicycle in Carlsbad has been identified as Susan Eiko Akana. The county medical examiner’s office released her name Tuesday, following the notification of next of kin.
Akana was riding her bike around 12:15 p.m. Sunday when she entered the turn lane at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Calle Barcelona and struck the curb on the concrete center divider, Carlsbad police Lt. Paul Mendes said. She then veered to the right as she tried to regain control of her bicycle and was struck by an oncoming vehicle, Mendes said. He said woman became trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene.
