Suspected car thief chased through Poway

(CNS) An auto theft suspect led deputies on a meandering 40-minute chase from Lakeside through eastern Poway to Ramona in a stolen car today before finally pulling over and surrendering.

A patrolman spotted the 1992 Honda Accord at Winter Gardens Boulevard and Lemon Crest Drive and tried to pull it over about 10 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. Mike Munsey said.

handcuffs1The driver — later identified as 27-year-old Timothy Allen Bliss of Ramona — allegedly refused to yield and fled to the north, soon entering state Route 67 and speeding past the Foster area and through eastern Poway.

Near Air Mail Lane, the Accord ran over a spike strip that sheriff’s personnel had laid across the roadway. Though the sedan’s tires were shredded and falling apart, the suspect continued trying to evade deputies chasing him in cruisers and aboard a patrol helicopter.

The pursuit crisscrossed various back-country roads before Bliss — by this time driving on the bare rims of the stolen car — finally pulled to a stop near the intersection of Pamo Road and Pile Street.

“He just decided he didn’t want to play anymore,’’ Munsey said.

At that point, Bliss gave up without further incident and was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and evading peace officers.
