RB Foundation awards $15K in local grants

Several hundred Rancho Bernardans gathered Tuesday the 21st year to express their thanks for their blessings at the community’s Thanksgiving luncheon.

The Nov. 23 event at Rancho Bernardo Inn was filled with tradition that included catching up with longtime fellow Rancho Bernardans and making new acquaintances, eating a traditional turkey dinner and learning which community groups were receiving grants from the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation.

Harry Potter fans flock to movie opening in Poway

It was a magic-filled night for near 300 muggles who were the first to see the latest Harry Potter movie in Poway.

Some muggles (non-magical folk in the Potter world) started lining up at 9:30 p.m. Thursday for the midnight showing of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” at UltraStar Cinemas in the Poway Creekside center.

The movie is the first half of the seven-book series’ conclusion, which due to its length and complexity has been divided into two installments. The second will debut in July 2011.

Students get up-close look at Sea World stars

Sea World representatives brought a variety of creatures to Bernardo Heights Middle School Wednesday as part of the theme park’s educational program.

The presentation included student encounters with a white ibis, American alligator, sulphur crested cockatoo and Magellanic penguin in the school gym.

The Sea World Cares Tour, presented at schools throughout the county for more than two decades, has a new focus this year — an emphasis on Sea World’s rescue efforts around the world, according to Sea World San Diego spokeswoman Alexandra Kuty.

Powegians in new KUSI ‘oxy’ documentary

A special documentary, “Oxy: What Your Kids Aren’t Telling You,” aired live Tuesday on KUSI with a handful of Powegians — from Mayor Don Higginson to other San Diego County leaders.

Higginson spoke about the risks of taking the drug, OxyContin, which has claimed the lives of several Poway High School students.

Suspects flee attempted Carmel Mountain Ranch ATM robbery

Several would-be thieves smashed in a window at a Carmel Mountain Ranch pub and used a power tool to attempt to get at the contents of an automated teller machine before becoming scared off early today, police said.

The burglary alarm at Conway’s Irish Pub at 11040 Rancho Carmel Drive sounded about 5:30 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

CIF UPDATE: Poway volleyball team falls to La Costa in semifinals

The Poway girls volleyball team was eliminated from the CIF San Diego Section championships on Wednesday, falling in three games against La Costa Canyon, the powerhouse team that’s considered among the best in the nation.

La Costa won the semifinal match 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 and advanced to the Division I finals on Saturday. The Titans concluded their season with an overall record of 28-9.

Football playoffs start Friday

The playoffs are here.

On Friday, the football teams of Poway and Rancho Bernardo will take the field for games that are truly must-win.

After the months of training, of long practices and hard-fought wins and losses, the season comes down to these four quarters, each 12 minutes long.

Both Poway and Rancho Bernardo high schools will be holding 7 p.m. first-round matches on Friday. Admission is $9 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.

In Division I, Poway (6-4 overall) will host El Cajon’s Granite Hills High School (5-5 overall). The winner of the encounter will travel to Vista High School to take on the tournament’s third seed.

In Division II, Rancho Bernardo (8-2 overall) will host Bonita Vista (3-7 overall) for a game that will determine who will play against third-seeded Mission Hills.

Cross Country runners set for CIF finals Saturday

Morley Field near Balboa Park will host the CIF San Diego Section cross country championships on Saturday, and several local teams are looking forward to the competition and the chance to advance to the state championships.

Expectations are high for senior Molly Grabill of Rancho Bernardo High School, the defending state CIF champion who went on to win the Foot Locker West Regional last year.

Poway grappler Barrios one of CIF’s top 50 athletes

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the local CIF section released a list of the Top 50 Athletes of the First 50 Years of the San Diego Section.

One of the former student athletes included in the list was wrestler Brody Barrios, a Poway High graduate.

Barrios, a 2000 grad who now coaches wrestling at San Marcos High School, said he was surprised to learn he is included in the list, which also features Reggie Bush, Bill Walton, Junior Seau and Mt. Carmel High School grad Eric Chavez.

Teen band The Urban Outcast prepares for first big gig

The Urban Outcast — a new band of teen rockers whose members are eighth-graders at Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch — is getting ready for its first big gig.

The teens will be performing at 6 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Center in North Park (3925 Ohio Street, San Diego). The venue has a capacity of 300.
