A man acted as the getaway driver in a series of five takeover- style bank robberies — including one in Rancho Bernardo — that netted more than $293,000, a prosecutor said Monday. But a defense attorney said there wasn’t enough evidence to tie his client to all of the holdups.
Thaddeus Williams, 24, is the first of four defendants to stand trial in the series of bank robberies that occurred between September 2008 and January 2009. Jeremy Gibbs, 23, Tranes Goins, 29 and Terry Mixon, 25, will be tried next month.

The release date for a draft environmental impact report on the Poway Walmart expansion proposal has once again been pushed back, this time to April.
“We just got the last section last week so all has been reviewed,” said Bob Manis, the city’s development services director. “We are now waiting for our comments to be addressed by the consultant.”
The last section addressed “sustainability” issues, which include greenhouse gas emissions, he said.

Valley Elementary School’s Homework Club is beginning its 11th year, four of which have been with Itziar Haumschilt overseeing the program.
Most of the kids and everyone else at the school call Haumschilt, who has vibrant red hair and a Spanish accent, by her nickname “Itzy,” she said.
According to “Chappy” Dave Walden, Valley’s program is a faith-based Christian ministry, which he helped start in early August 2000. Of four homework clubs he started, only Valley has survived.
