Rancho Bernardo High hires new girls basketball coach

The Rancho Bernardo High varsity girls basketball team will have a new coach next season.

Kai Harris, who was head coach for the Broncos junior varsity program last season, has been hired to take over for Robyn Fortney, who is getting married and expects to relocate to the East Coast.

Before coaching the junior varsity program at RB, Harris was an assistant coach with the men’s program at San Diego Mesa Community College.

All-CIF teams unveiled for winter sports

Reed McKenna, the UCLA-bound senior forward whose goals helped to lead Rancho Bernardo High’s soccer team to its first CIF San Diego Section title in school history, was named as the section’s player of the year for soccer.

McKenna scored 26 goals for the Broncos, including three against Torrey Pines in the CIF San Diego Section Final.

Coach Kurt Trecker, who has been the Broncos’ head coach since 2006, was named soccer coach of the year.

The two selections are among the highlights of the 2010-2011 winter sports All-CIF teams, which were selected through the auspices of the San Diego Hall of Champions and recently announced.

Here’s a look at the golf teams of Poway and Rancho Bernardo High schools.

RANCHO BERNARDO

Coach: Kevin Keller

Last season: The Broncos were the Palomar League Champions.

This season: Rancho Bernardo returns with a solid team led by senior Eric Sugimoto, a three-time All-CIF returner who has signed on to play golf at the University of the Pacific next year.

POWAY

Coach: David Thompson

Last season: After a sluggish start that saw Poway lose its first four matches, the Titans were able to rebound. Poway qualified nine golfers to the league tournament, where they finished in third place behind Torrey and Carlsbad. The Titans also sent its team to CIF, where they finished in ninth place. They also had some individual accomplishments, with Andrew Archer moving on to the State Regional Tournament, earning one of 11 spots on a sudden-death playoff.

Lacrosse Preview: RB, Poway should lead Palomar League

The girls lacrosse teams of Poway and Rancho Bernardo are looking forward to their first of two meetings on April 15.

Last season, Poway won both of the two rivalry matches, and the Broncos say they’re looking for a rematch.

Both teams are in the top 10 in the county, according to computer-generated statistics from laxpower.com, a lacrosse website, with Rancho Bernardo ranked sixth and Poway ranked seventh.

The Rancho Bernardo Inn is hosting a Charity Golf Tournement followed by lunch and a Masters Viewing Party Thursday, April 7. The North County Soccer Park is registering for its Li’l Kickers program, a soccer program for boys and girls ages 18 months to 9 years, as well as parent/child classes for ages 18 months to 3 years. NCSP also offers Li’l Sluggers baseball classes for ages 2 to 6 years old. Registration is now open for the 8-week Spring Session of Li’l Kickers and Li’l Sluggers, which starts Sunday, April 17 through Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 30. The Philip Rivers 5K Walk and Fun Run is being held 7 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at NTC Park at Liberty Station, 2455 Cushing Road, Point Loma, to benefit the Rivers of Hope Foundation formed in 2010 by Philip and Tiffany Rivers. Poway sheriff’s captain promoted, to leave station

Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Elvin has been promoted to commander and will be leaving his Poway post to replace Cmdr. Glenn Revell, who after 28 years with the department, retired this week.
