Remington Club hosts community fundraiser Saturday

By Elizabeth Marie Himchak

The Remington Club is inviting those of all ages to a carnival-style event on Saturday that will raise money for victims of recent natural disasters.

It will be noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14 outside the retirement facility at 16916 Hierba Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Because of limited on-site parking, attendees are advised to use nearby parking lots, such as the Rancho Bernardo Vons Town Center.

Admission is free, but tickets for activities, games, bounce house and food (like hot dogs, ice cream and churros) will be 50 cents each, with various amounts required. Tickets can also be used to enter drawings held every five minutes for prizes worth at least $50, said Lori Kim, Remington’s marketing director.

Winners must be present and participants can enter the drawings in a similar fashion to a silent auction, she said. Donated prizes include gift cards to restaurants like URGE American Gastropub, The Barrel Room, and Carvers Steaks and Chops; car wash and auto detailing at Chevron; a year of free ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery; shoes from Foot Solutions; gift items from Postal Annex; along with gift baskets, toys and stuffed animals.

“The local businesses in Rancho Bernardo have been very generous,” she said. “They have donated wonderful raffle gifts.”

Kim said Remington will send all proceeds to the American Red Cross, instructing it to dedicate half toward those in Japan impacted by its recent earthquake and tsunami, and the other half to those in the United States impacted by recent tornados.

“We’ve never done a fundraiser before, but these are such devastating events,” Kim said, adding Remington wanted to help Japan since it sent aid to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

“The seniors here are very generous, caring people who are proud to be part of the Rancho Bernardo community and want to do something …. to help others,” she said.
