Nick Venuto Memorial Bike Ride, Walk set for July 9
by Pat Kumpan
The Nick Venuto Memorial Bike Ride and Walk is being planned for 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 9 at Westview High School, 13500 Camino del Sur.
The event was tentatively set for June 18, but has been changed, according to David Voris with The Descenders, a Poway bike group which Venuto also belonged to in Poway.
Venuto, 40, a bioenergy executive, avid biker and family man was killed on May 31 when an out-of-control car veered off state Route 56, through a fence, striking him and another cyclist riding along a bike path in Rancho Penasquitos.
CHP officer Art Athans said Venuto was killed “almost instantly.”
The other rider, Baron Herdelin-Doherty, 51, CEO of the San Diego County YMCA, remains in an intensive care unit at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, “but is improving every day,” said Shelly McTighe-Rippengale, a YMCA spokeswoman.
The upcoming ride includes San Dieguito Road, a favorite of Venuto’s, while planners have also scheduled a visit to the memorial site off state Route 56 in Rancho Penasquitos.
Participants are asked to arrive at the school about 8:30 a.m. for the 10.7-mile bike ride and 2.6-mile walk.
A flier now being circulated about the upcoming ride/walk states, “Come join us as we celebrate the memories Nick left us, and honor him for what he brought to his family and the community.”
A special account has been established for the Venuto children, Nicholas and Marisa. Donations to account #2998763508 will be accepted at any Chase Bank.
