Editorial: “Thumbs” for July

THUMBS UP to all who organized Independence Day festivities for locals. In In Poway, the annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July was a real hit, along with fireworks at Poway High School. In Rancho Bernardo, the Spirit of the Fourth Committee organized activities that included a community fair, RB Idol competition, the 42nd annual parade and fireworks at Bernardo Heights Middle School. In 4S Ranch, the community’s homeowners association held a carnival and there were fireworks at Del Norte High School.

Thousands of local residents participated in the free and low-cost July 4 offerings. Community activities like these provide a small-town feeling for residents.

THUMBS DOWN, and we mean way down, to Gov. Jerry Brown and our state legislators passing a budget that once again kicks the can down the road when it comes to addressing real spending reforms. This version is full of overly optimistic revenue projections that will likely fall flat, resulting in deeper cuts to our public schools and social services. The budget also attempts to extort — and that’s just the word for it — $1.7 billion in local property taxes.

Our so-called leaders in Sacramento have short memories. In 2004, voters passed Proposition 1A forbidding further raids on local funds. Just last November voters passed Proposition 22, which extended the prohibition to redevelopment agency funds.

Don’t be surprised if this whole mess ends up in the courts. The hope here is that local governments will prevail and state leaders will be sent to the political woodshed.

THUMBS UP to County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, the Small Business Development Center, San Diego North Chamber of Commerce and Business & Entrepreneurship Center for hosting a free workshop that explained how local small businesses could acquire government-related contracts.

The June 3 workshop in Rancho Bernardo Library attracted around 70 small-business owners. Among topics covered were the contracting process, effective marketing and other tips for business success.

THUMBS UP to the volunteers who organized the third annual Relay for Life in Rancho Bernardo and to all those who participated. The 24-hour relay in Rancho Bernardo Community Park on June 18-19 raised close to $30,000 for the American Cancer Society.

THUMBS UP to the 4S Ranch Library for starting the 4S Foodies group, which met for the first time on June 28. The free activity for adults is led by Kathy Jung, a library technician and certified chef. She said the goal is to introduce locals to different dishes, markets, chefs and restaurants. Each meeting from 6-7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday in 4S Ranch Library’s community room will have a theme and occasionally a guest speaker. For details, call Jung at 858-673-4697.

THUMBS UP to the San Diego County Library system for the free  acoustic music series at the Poway Library and other library locations.  That, as well as the Sharp Memorial Hospital series, which also has free  admission at alternating sites, Lake Poway and Old Poway Park, provide great entertainment this summer for music lovers of all ages — and the price is right! During these tough economic times, it’s nice to know bargains still exist.

  1. Thumbs up to RealLiving Lifestyles who moved into the old SD National Bank in RB, for hosting an old fashioned 4th of July. The grandstand was set up on the lawn, with Jay and Kendra Jeffocat MC'ing for the 13th year. Free popcorn and lemonade, and yogurt coupons from Golden Spoon (1 small free yogurt), were handed out while community members watched the parade from the upper balcony. This is expected to be an annual event!
