Postal Service canceling Rancho Bernardo collection boxes

By Elizabeth Marie Himchak

Removal of five street-side mail collection boxes in Rancho Bernardo will begin next week, according to a Postal Service spokeswoman.

Four of the five are regular mail collection boxes, while the fifth is for Express Mail. In mid-June, a notice was placed on all the boxes, notifying locals they are being removed, said Eva Jackson, a U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman.

The regular boxes are at 15898 Bernardo Center Drive in the 92127 side of Rancho Bernardo and 16290 Bernardo Heights Parkway, 16351 Pomerado Road and 16398 Horado Road in the 92128 side, she said. The Express box is at 11440 W. Bernardo Court in the 92127 side.

“Every year we do a density test on collection boxes,” Jackson said. The test was for 10 days in April. “If it has less than 25 pieces (of mail) a day, it is eligible for removal.”

The regular box removal is scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The Express Mail box could be removed on Aug. 17 or 18. Until then, mail will be collected from the boxes.

Removal is a cost-saving measure since with fewer stops, routes can be consolidated, Jackson said.

In the 92127 ZIP code, there are 15 collection boxes, while in the 92128 ZIP code there are 32 boxes. The vast majority are located in Rancho Bernardo, with just a few in 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs — communities that share Rancho Bernardo’s ZIP codes.

As for two other noticed boxes in Rancho Bernardo, Jackson said it was a mistake when brought to her attention by the Rancho Bernardo News Journal on Monday.

The box at 17130 W. Bernardo Drive in Westwood (across from the Holiday Inn) was originally on the removal list, but later deleted, she said.

“It had 24 pieces (of mail) so we decided to not take it but just watch it during the next density test,” she said.

As for a collection box in Seven Oaks near the intersection of Diego Drive and Obispo Road, “It was never on the list, so I’m not sure why it has a sign,” Jackson said, adding a postal employee will remove the erroneously placed signs.

They posted signs on them saying they are being removed so the public stopped putting mail in them. Now they will "watch" them and VOILA! – no mail – surprise! A self-fulfilling prophecy. Typical of USPS in San Diego. The San Diego PO seems to make a lot of "mistakes" once the media reports on them.
