Innovations in dental implant technology have made them the most popular and effective means by which to replace missing teeth.

Aerosmith’s front man Steven Tyler is accustomed to making headlines; but when he suffered a bad fall in Paraguay last month and found himself in need of emergency dental care, Tyler received a far less glamorous dose of media attention. According to the Washington Post, Tyler, 63, was taken ill while on tour and fell in his hotel bathroom, sustaining significant bruising to his face and losing two front teeth. Paraguayan dentist Dr. Maria Bastos, who treated Tyler, gave the “American Idol” judge two dental implants to restore his smile and help speed his recovery for a concert held in the capital city of Asuncion. With the assistance of other medical professionals, Tyler went from sporting a black eye and a gap-riddled smile to smiling and appearing more or less like his usual self in a matter of days – thanks in large part to the incredible success made possible by modern dental implant technology.

Over the last several decades, dental implants have come to the forefront as the most desirable, customizable and effective means by which to replace missing teeth for a natural, healthy-looking smile. Implants can also be used to add support for partial or full dentures and enhance overall strength and retention. Provided that they have sufficient bone mass to bear the implants, most patients are eligible for this form of dental work; however, it is always important to discuss dental implants and related procedures with a qualified and experienced dental professional before pursuing treatment.

What are dental implants? A basic overview from the experts at A+ Family Dentistry

Dental implants involve several different components. Structurally, the implant is made from a titanium-based cylinder that is used to replace the missing tooth root. From there, the dentist will add additional elements to the cylinder and finally finish it off with a crown, or cap, to replicate the appearance and function of the missing tooth. In order to first determine each patient’s bone density and then confirm the size and style of implant required, the dentist will take an x-ray and possible CT-scan to evaluate each individual case.
