Prep basketball: Poway High falls to La Costa Canyon

By Alex Brooks

The Poway High boys basketball team learned first hand Monday night why La Costa Canyon is considered the No. 1 team in the San Diego Section.

The Mavericks used a stifling defense and rode the hot hands of guards Jeff Van Dyke and David Travers to knock off the Titans 59-39 at Torrey Pines High in a special tip-off game before the start of the Holiday Classic Tournament on Tuesday.

Travers, a senior, poured in a game-high 22 points, while Van Dyke set the tone early with three 3-pointers in the first quarter to spark a 13-2 run by the Mavericks to open the game. Meanwhile, the Titans struggled from the field, shooting just 32-percent. La Costa Canyon did a nice job bottling up Poway’s big man, Sam Beeler, holding the 6-foot-10, UC Santa Barbara-bound center to just 11 points.

The Mavericks led 34-17 by halftime and Poway never threatened to get back into the game. The Titans’ Nehemiah Gross scored six quick points in the third quarter, but the Mavericks answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to quickly end that threat.

The 7-4 Titans will try to fight their way back into the win column Tuesday, when they take on Punahou of Hawaii at Westview High School in a first-round game of the Governors Division of the Holiday Classic.
