Protect pets
Rancho Bernardo Off Leash Dog Park will host a low-cost rabies and micro-chipping clinic for dogs, cats and rabbits from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8. It will take place at the dog park’s entrance Park at the south end of Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive.

Child prostitution film
As part of National Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Day on Jan. 11, local Soroptimists, the Action Network and San Diego County Office of Education are sponsoring free showings of the documentary “Indoctrinated, The Grooming of Children into Prostitution.” It includes San Diego footage and interviews with former sexually exploited youth.
According to authorities, San Diego is a high intensity child prostitution area since local vulnerable teens are recruited at malls, schools, parks, concerts and beaches, and on the Internet. Teen runaways are usually caught up in prostitution within 48 hours on the street.
Soroptimists of Rancho Bernardo and Poway are showing the film for free at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Film content is not appropriate for children under 13 years. Older teens and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Animal talk

David Edick will discuss “Israel & Cyprus: Deep Water Gas and Insecurity” from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Jan. 5 at the World Affairs Council, North County Chapter meeting. He will describe the dangerous scenario developing in the eastern Mediterranean through Israel’s deep water gas discoveries.

Join the board
Candidacy forms for Rancho Bernardo Planning Board’s March election are available at the seven community centers, Rancho Bernardo Library, Casa de las Campanas and The Remington Club. The filing deadline is Jan. 31.
To be eligible, residents must have attended a monthly planning board meeting within a year of the election. They can fulfill the requirement through February. The board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday at Oaks North Community Center, 12578 Oak North Drive in Rancho Bernardo. It does not plan to meet in January.

Map to save the economy
Author Jack Bowsher will present a road map to fixing the nation’s economy at the Tuesday, Jan. 10 Conservative Order of Good Government luncheon. His presentation is based on his book, “Educating Voters for Rebuilding America.” He formerly worked with senior federal government financial executives on ways to eliminate annual deficits.

Win prizes at library
San Diego County Library, including 4S Ranch and Poway branches, is holding a Winter Reading Challenge through Jan. 15. Patrons of all ages will be entered in weekly drawings every time they check out five items. Prizes include board games, ear buds, thumb drives, jigsaw puzzles, books, puppets, coffee mugs, free beverage coupons and tickets to local events.

Recycle trees
Boy Scout Troop 685 will pick up Christmas trees for recycling at residential curbsides in some neighborhoods on Monday, Jan. 2. Trees must be at the curb by 9 a.m. with a tax-deductible donation attached in an envelope. Write checks to “B.S.A. Troop 685.”
Service will be available in the High Country West, Camino Bernardo and Westwood neighborhoods of Rancho Bernardo, and in Carmel Mountain Ranch. Ornaments, lights, tinsel and stands must be removed.

Going through divorce?
The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court, is hosting a 13-week divorce recovery program for adults called Divorce Care, 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 4 to March 28.
The program is designed to help participants grow through their divorce while going through it and for anyone still suffering with unresolved issues from a past divorce. Financial aid workshop
A workshop on the FAFSA — Free Application for Federal Student Aid — will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 in the Poway High School Performing Arts Center, 15498 Espola Road.
The free workshop is for parents of college-bound seniors. The FAFSA is a form everyone planning on higher education should complete. It is used for federal aid, by the state of California, colleges (2-year and 4-year) and universities, and vocational institutions to determine their financial aid packages. You may want to bring the FAFSA worksheet, available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Adopt a doll
Sponsors are needed to provide healing dolls to children at hospitals in San Diego and Jerusalem. The dolls are made by local Aviva Hadassah chapter members and those at Jewish Family Service at Temple Adat Shalom.

Hospital seeks volunteers

Have outgrown kids’ clothes?
Soroptimists of Rancho Bernardo are collecting new and gently used baby, toddler and young children’s clothing to size 7 to distribute to needy families through North County Interfaith in Escondido. Recipients will be encouraged to bring in clean outgrown clothing and take larger needed sizes at no cost.
It is hoped this will be a long term, self-sustaining project. Donations can be made by contacting Judy Horning at 858-748-0069 or any RB Soroptimist.

Rancho Bernardo Senior Services needs volunteers. Front office volunteers are needed 3.5 hours a day to answer phones, schedule appointments, greet visitors and provide community information. Drivers are needed to deliver hot meals to home-bound individuals who live in Rancho Bernardo.
