Prep girls soccer: Poway High beats rival Rancho Bernardo 3-1
By Michael Bower
Goals are often scored with the feet or the head, but on Thursday night Emily Faust used an unconventional method among soccer players to find the back of the net twice – her hands.
The Poway High senior captain had two long throw-ins that ended up in the back of the net – one grazed off a defenders head and the other deflected off a group of players – and it proved to be the difference, as the Titans defeated rival Rancho Bernardo 3-1 at Rancho Bernardo High.
“I was just in shock,” Faust said of her first throw-in score, which came in the 52nd minute and gave Poway a 1-0 lead. “I have had times where I threw it in and someone flicked it in the goal, but that is the first time that I just threw it in off a defender. It was crazy.”
Crazy as it was, Faust managed to have a similar thing happen just nine minutes later. Both throw-ins were about 30 yards from the net and up the sideline. Faust, who attributes her long throw to her long arms, was able to toss the ball right in front of the net both times.
“Most people don’t expect it,” she said. “I have been working on my throws a lot lately.”
The first goal grazed off a defenders head and into the net, while the second goal was misplayed by the goalkeeper and bounced off a group of players. The second goal gave Poway a 2-1 lead with under 20 minutes to play. Even longtime soccer coach Jen Lalor-Nielsen said two goals from a throw-in is a rarity.
“It happens maybe once every 10 years or something,” said the Titans’ coach. “But that is actually something we talked about with this field. It is a small field and throw-ins are just like corners, so every throw-in becomes deadly.”
The win keeps the Titans within striking distance of Palomar League leader Westview. Meanwhile, Rancho Bernardo now has a tough hill to climb in the race for the league crown.
The Broncos had plenty of chances to take the lead in the final 20 minutes of the first half. But Rancho Bernardo was unable to put away any of its chances in front of the net and the game was tied at 0 going into halftime.
Poway took the 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute off the Faust throw-in, but the Broncos answered with a goal in the 60th minute. Tara Meier ripped a shot from 25 yards away and it hit the crossbar and bounced back in front of the net. Alina Broton raced to the ball and scored the equalizer.
But only a minute later Poway regained the lead on another Faust throw-in. Then, in the 69th minute, the Titans’ Jet Wollrabe got her foot on a loose ball in front of the net and banged it in for a 3-1 Poway lead.
“I think Rancho Bernardo had the better chances in the first half, especially in the last 20 minutes,” Lalor-Nielsen said. “But we had several opportunities in the second half and we were able to put away our chances.”
