Prep girls soccer: Poway High takes over third place in Palomar League

By Michael Bower

The Poway High girls soccer team has been on quite the roller-coaster ride this season. The Titans have only been able to put together back-to-back wins twice, but are hoping to start a hot streak before the section playoffs.

Poway got headed in the right direction Thursday night.

The Titans rebounded from Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Westview with a 3-1 victory over visiting Mt. Carmel in a showdown between two squads battling it out for third place in the Palomar League.

With Westview and Torrey Pines running away with the top two spots in league, Mt. Carmel (7-8-1, 2-3-1 Palomar League) and Poway (7-6-2, 3-2-1) were left to fight it out for sole possession of third place. The Titans built a 2-0 halftime lead and rolled to their first win over the Sundevils this season. The first game between the two resulted in a 1-1 draw.

Courtney McCandless scored twice and had an assist, while Jamie McCandless buried the other goal. Cecily Gilson and Emily Fett each registered an assist, as the Titans are hoping to gain some momentum with only four games to go before the end of the regular season.

The McCandless’ have combined for 11 of the teams 28 goals this season. Fett posted her third assist of the year, leaving her just one behind Emily Faust for the team lead.

Poway will have its hands full with Torrey Pines and Westview still on the slate. The Titans will host Torrey Pines on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Titans have a chance to play the role of spoiler, if they can manage a victory over the Wolverines or the Falcons.
