Prep girls basketball: Mt. Carmel High hands Poway its second straight loss
The Poway High girls basketball team has won three straight Palomar League titles. In order to win its fourth, the Titans are now going to need some help.
Mt. Carmel played well down the stretch and stunned visiting Poway 38-31 to move into a first-place tie with Westview in the Palomar League. The Titans fall to third place and have two losses compared to just one for the Sundevils and the Wolverines.
Poway’s Mandy Castro tied the game at 31 with just under two minutes to go, but the Sundevils responded and took the lead for good on a basket with 46 seconds left. Mt. Carmel was led by senior Erica Lohrenz’s 14 points, while Jessica Larsen led the Titans with 11 points.
The Titans have lost two straight – only the second time this season they have done that – and still have Torrey Pines, Ramona, Westview and Rancho Bernardo left on the schedule. Poway will likely need to win out and have Mt. Carmel drop a game in order to gain at least a share of the title.
