My Town: Some good news around town, bad news from back East

By Bob Emery

I recently wrote about the efforts of the members of the Community Church of Poway to restore our town’s historic redwood chapel which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. The community response to appeals for contributions has been impressive and much of the exterior work is nearly completed. Over $46,000 has been raised with nearly two-thirds coming from outside the church’s congregation.

The largest single contribution came from the Green Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Tim Konold of the Green Valley Ward presented the Reverend Glen Larsen of Community Church with a check for $13,000 putting the restoration fund well within the range of completing the entire project. Other individual contributions of $5,000 and $1,500 have also been received along with dozens of smaller amounts from throughout the Poway region.

“This has truly been a community effort,” said Rev. Larsen. “It shows what the historic chapel means to this community.”

I received a couple of emails from people who had actually read my previous column and made contributions. It is always gratifying to know someone reads my stuff. Contributions are still being accepted and may be sent to “Chapel Preservation,” 13501 Community Road, Poway, CA 92064.

Restaurant alert: Amphibians delight, Blue Frog’s Sports Bar and Grill has opened in Poway and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Breakfast is Thursday through Sunday only.) It is located in the Wal-mart center across from the DMV. Partners Eric Paterson and Emilio Savoji serve up a traditional sports bar menu of burgers, pasta, pizza, wings and, of course, beer. Frog’s includes Poway’s own Lightning Brewery products on tap as well as 16 other choices. Suzanne and I had breakfast there the other day and grazed on traditional bacon and eggs and their veggie omelet. Emilio is an enthusiastic greeter who claims only to be the “dishwasher.” Try giving Frog’s a leg up!

On a much lower note, one can only be truly disgusted with the performance of the Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination. To be fair, the Democrats would be just as disgusting, only this year their candidate is a forgone conclusion. How supposedly intelligent, dedicated and sincere individuals can engage in such despicable rhetoric and vicious attacks in the guise of “debate,” is beyond belief. Gingrich and Romney and their supposedly “independent” PAC’s spent nearly $15 million dollars in Florida alone vilifying each other with outrageous and demeaning accusations. The only semi-civil voice among the lot seems to be Congressman Ron Paul who is off on his own crusade of libertarianism and really doesn’t care what the major candidates are saying.

On that note, I actually find myself agreeing with a few of Congressman Paul’s platforms and that frightens me. Anyway, the truly amazing result of all of this is that in the end, they will all kiss and make up as if none of the personal attacks had happened and if the winner of the nomination becomes president, the losers will fill cabinet posts, ambassadorships, etc. Remember how Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton slugged it out and accused each other all kinds of transgressions in 2008? He is now President Obama and Clinton is secretary of state. Does that mean if Romney becomes president, we get Gingrich as……?

Whatever happened to the good old days when Sarah Palin was the scariest Republican candidate?

Bob…your column was palatable until you had to opine on your political bent. We all know you are a liberal and, therefore, your criticism of the Republican primary process is neither newsworthy or interesting.

What employment problem? The last 3 years has created 80,000,000 new economist jobs and 120,000,000 new political commentator jobs. Everybody's working at one or the other or both. You're not being fair. You've got both. You need to give one up so another can have a job.

Hey Dan, we can't all be engineers. And a job is a job right? Better than being on the dole for sure!!

To Bob's point, I think he's right that the Democrats would be eating their own also if there were a race, but if memory serves, Obama and Clinton were a little more gentile, Clinton accusing Obama of lacking the experience to lead the nation and Obama criticizing Clinton for her support of the Iraq war. You have these Republicans calling each other sleeze bags, literally! If they call each other sleeze bags, I shutter to think what Obama's packs will call them in the general election! It's a sad day when ONE m(b)illionaire can fund a pack and keep his otherwise unworthy candidate in a race. Gingrich would have dropped out by now if it weren't for Adelson, and same with Santorum. The only thing I do like about Santorum is at least he's not as negative as the others. We'll see how long that lasts…

Ooops!…Santorum did the Godzilla thing today!

Amy, are you suggesting those on the dole should find just any job? That's really a radical thought for a screaming liberal. Don't you continue to want the hard workers to pay for those on the dole with income redistribution?
You may want to attend another OWS demo. Seems like you need to be refreshed.
As for you echoing Bob Emery, I guess liberals of a feather stick together. Emery has to be the hypocrite of this era for criticizing the Republicans by saying "how supposedly intelligent, dedicated and sincere individuals can engage in such despicable rhetoric and vicious attacks in the guise of “debate", is beyond belief". He should reread the columns where he engaged in such despicable, hateful and vicious attacks in the guise of "debate" when commenting about the Tea Party and anyone who shows empathy for their cause.
As an apparent leading citizen he appears to lack dignity.
