Prep baseball: Torrey Pines High evens series with Poway
By Michael Bower
The Poway High baseball team entered its series with Torrey Pines likely needing a sweep to get back in the hunt for the Palomar League title.
The Titans took Game 1 behind a complete-game, one-hitter by ace Taylor Miller, but the Falcons answered the challenge Wednesday afternoon in Game 2.
Torrey Pines was able to keep itself within a game of Rancho Bernardo with a 6-2 victory over the host Titans, which fell for the fifth time in Palomar League play and are now three games behind the Broncos with five to play.
The Falcons had just six hits in the game, but were able to get them at the right times. They had three hits in a four-run third inning and the other three in a two-run sixth inning.
Poway was able to compile eight hits, but never had more than a pair of hits in one inning. Torrey Pines starter Brock Larson scattered six hits over six innings, allowing just two runs – one earned – to get the win. Titans starter Evan Hindemith took the loss, giving up six runs – five earned – over six innings.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a sloppy defensive play by the Falcons with runners on first and third. Torrey Pines tried to get Kevin Newman stealing second, but appeared to have their signs crossed and the ball went into centerfield allowing Devin Dooney to score.
The lead wouldn’t last long, however. The Falcons sent eight hitters to the plate in the third inning. John Remick smacked an RBI single and Kyle Johnson ripped an RBI double to highlight the four-run inning.
Torrey Pines strung together three hits with two outs, including back-to-back RBI doubles by Jack Mitchell and Henry Grow, in the top of the sixth inning. The Titans answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, as Justin McSorley singled in Devin Dooney, who tripled to leadoff the inning.
The two teams will play the rubber game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Torrey Pines.
