Prep boys tennis: Rancho Bernardo High advances to section semifinals; Poway bounced in quarterfinals

The Rancho Bernardo High boys tennis team is still alive in the CIF San Diego Section Division I playoffs.

The two time defending champions advanced to the semifinals with a convincing 16-2 victory over Rancho Buena Vista Wednesday in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Broncos will host No. 3 La Costa Canyon Thursday at 3 p.m. with a trip to the championship match on the line.

William Chiu won all three of his matches in straight sets to lead the singles play, while defending CIF SDS individuals champion Tyler Pham and his partner Aiku Shinatnia won two matches in straight sets.

Top-seeded Torrey Pines is still alive on the other side of the bracket. The Falcons and Broncos have met in the section championship match in five of the last seven years and for the last three years in a row.

WESTVIEW 12, POWAY 6

The Titans ran into the third-place finisher in the Palomar League and once again couldn’t get past the Wolverines. The Titans’ team season came to a close with  Wednesday’s 12-6 loss in the CIF SDS Division I quarterfinals. Now Poway will get ready for the Palomar League individuals and doubles tournament.
