“More people are fixing their homes up instead of buying new ones. I see that more now. Before everyone was buying a new house. Now it’s a little different,” said Frank Gorin, who started the business Frank Gorin Custom Painting over 32 years ago in Poway. He has been in the painting profession for 50 years.

“You can get a new look by changing colors,” Gorin added.

Achieving a great end result, whether it’s a change of color or fixing a home which sorely needed new paint, is what Gorin enjoys as owner of his Poway business.

“It’s nice to walk away and have it look nice,” he said. “Sometimes there’s a big change of colors and the house looks completely different.”

Gorin specializes in interior and exterior repainting of homes, including rentals and custom homes. For exterior work, his business does stucco patching and repainting, wood priming and painting, extensive outdoor deck work, fence and patio cover painting and more. Gorin also specializes in painting older houses, including wood.

Interior work includes repainting of walls, doors and acoustic ceilings, as well as repainting and refinishing of kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

He primarily serves customers in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch and vicinity and throughout San Diego County. Most jobs are from repeat customers and referrals, Gorin said. Because of that, customer satisfaction is as the forefront of how the business is run.

“That people (customers) are happy — that’s what gets me the work. I make sure the jobs are done right,” Gorin said, noting that all jobs come with a guarantee.

Prices are very reasonable, Gorin said, and also he does not require any payment before work is started.

“We don’t ask for any money down. When we’re done and they’re happy, we get paid,” Gorin said.

The repaint process begins with gathering information, followed by a written bid. Once the customer accepts the bid, jobs start with prep work, such as power washing of exterior stucco and patching cracks and holes.

Gorin also helps customers select colors, including offering free paint samples and having customers visit the paint store. He also will have swatches of color painted so they can see what the hues will look like in their actual home.

A trend over the last few years has been for homeowners to go for darker shades of color for their exterior.

Stucco paint jobs tend to last somewhat indefinitely, Gorin noted, at least 10 to 12 years. Since wood weathers faster, wood paint jobs typically last at least seven to eight years.

Gorin is a longtime San Diego County resident, having been in San Diego since 1970 and in Poway since 1979, when he started the business. Frank Gorin Custom Painting is family-owned and operated. Gorin’s wife, Linda, helps to run the business and handles all administrative duties. Their three adult children all went to Poway High School: Anthony Gorin, who works for the business as foreman, and daughters Kellie Godfrey and Samantha Gorin.
