MLB Draft: Local names to watch for in 2012 MLB Draft

By Michael Bower

The MLB Draft starts today and will go through Wednesday. The local area should see a few draft picks. Here are some names to keep your eye out for during the draft. (Please feel free to add any names I might have missed in the comment area).

Wynton Bernard: A 2008 graduate of Rancho Bernardo High. Bernard graduated with honors on May 12 from Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York. The outfielder was named First Team All-Conference in the Metro-Atlantic League.

James Dykstra: A 2010 graduate of Rancho Bernardo High. Dykstra was drafted by the Red Sox out of high school but decided to attend college. He was named the A.I.I Pitcher of the Year while playing this past season at Cal State San Marcos. The right-hander had an ERA of 2.89 over 90.1 innings.

Kevin Newman: The Poway High shortstop seems to be pretty set on going to play ball at the University of Arizona, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be drafted. Newman will likely go way late in the draft or not at all, but only because teams won’t want to use a pick on a kid they don’t think will sign a pro ball contract. Newman has a golden opportunity to play at one of the top colleges in the nation and will likely take it unless he is selected in the top three rounds. Still, you might see him taken somewhere in this draft.

Bobby Brown: The 2007 graduate of Rancho Bernardo is currently a senior DH for the University of Arizona. He has been crushing the ball this season for the Wildcats and has them in the Super Regional of the College World Series. Brown is a fifth-year senior at Arizona. His teammates call him “grandpa” because he is the oldest at 22. I have not read any reports on his draft status, but he is a name to watch for.

Brian Busick: A Poway High graduate in 2008, Busick has been a spot starter for Stanford. The right-hander has only logged two innings this season, but did well for the Cardinal in 2010 and 2011.
