Athlete of the Week: Dwyer caps amazing game for Rancho Bernardo Little League with HR

Jack Dwyer had hit home runs in practice before. But he never experienced the feeling of launching a baseball out of the yard during a real game … until Sunday.

The 12-year-old, right-handed slugger for the Rancho Bernardo Little League Majors All-Star team capped a phenomenal day with a solo blast just over the center-field wall in RB’s 6-1 victory over Valley Center.

Dwyer’s first career home run capped a 4-for-4 day, which included two doubles and four RBIs during the opening day of District 31 Little League All-Star Majors action. For his efforts, Dwyer is the Pomerado Newspapers Athlete of the Week.

“It felt so good to hit my first home run in a game,” a smiling Dwyer said. “It means a lot. It was really fun. Maybe I will have a few more.”

Dwyer proved to be clutch throughout RB’s victory on Sunday. He ripped a pair of doubles, including a two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning. It turned a close 3-0 game into a 5-0 advantage for Rancho Bernardo.

“This was one of my best games of the season and maybe my life,” Dwyer said. “It was a lot of fun.”

RB Major All-Star coach Christopher Fousek has been coaching Dwyer since he was about 7 years old. Fousek said it was nice to see Dwyer get to round the bases for the first time.

“That was just a phenomenal performance,” Fousek said. “Some of those were really clutch at-bats with two outs, too. He really put on a show out there.”

Dwyer is described as a smart, hard-working leader for RB. He always has a great attitude, which in return helps the team stay on track.

“He is just a fantastic kid,” Fousek said. “When he is going well, it usually is going well for all of us. He is just a really intelligent, cerebral baseball player.”

Dwyer, who played left field on Sunday, is hoping the team can take home the District 31 title. But he knows it is not going to be easy.

“We have a shot at it, but we are going to have to continue to play well in every game,” he said.
