Armed Poway man arrested after standoff
POWAY (CNS) – An apparently suicidal man is in custody after arming himself with numerous loaded firearms and threatening sheriff’s deputies as they tried to coax him out of his Poway home, authorities said.
Deputies received a report about 3:20 p.m. Monday of a possibly armed man threatening suicide in the 13700 block of Powers Road, according to San Diego County sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Matzkiw. Deputies responded and spotted David Becker armed with a rifle inside the front entry of a home, he said.
Becker, 53, allegedly told deputies he wanted to end his life and would not be taken into custody alive. He also said the inside of his residence was booby-trapped with explosives, Matzkiw said.
A sheriff’s crisis negotiations team was called and eventually coaxed Becker outside, where he was taken into custody without further incident, according to the sergeant. The standoff lasted a few hours.
The sheriff’s bomb arson team checked out the home and found no explosives rigged to go off but did find loaded firearms and ammunition, along with a bulletproof vest, Matzkiw said.
Becker was taken to Pomerado Hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, Matzkiw said.
