All-Stars Softball: Poway 14U All-Stars shine in Rancho Bernardo tournament

The Poway Girls Softball League’s 14U Diamond all-star team got strong pitching and defense to finish in second place in the 32nd annual Rancho Bernardo Grand Slam Summer Jam last weekend.

The Poway Girls Softball League’s 14U Diamond all-star team finished in second place at the 32nd annual Rancho Bernardo Grand Slam Summer Jam tournament last weekend.

Justine Brosemer tossed two complete games against Ramona — one in pool play and one in the semifinals — striking out 15 batters over 11 innings combined. Georgia Burge (first base), Shelby Galambos (center field), Caylee Vick (shortstop) and Kayla Milstead (catcher) all played outstanding defense throughout the tournament.

Burge also hit well, smashing two home runs and collecting five RBIs for the team. PGSL fell in the title game to its nemesis, Mira Mesa, 6-1. The team lost to Mira Mesa in the title game of the Runway Classic in early June, too.

“It was like deja vu,” 14U Diamond coach Doug Vick said. “I jokingly say that Mira Mesa has our number. But in both tournaments the game before the championship game has been our best game.”

PGSL tied Ramona 1-1 in pool play, but in the semifinals the bats got hot and Brosemer tossed another gem to lead the team to a 6-1 victory. PGSL was unable to keep the bats going against a strong Mira Mesa squad in the title game.

“It was a phenomenal weekend for the girls,” Vick said. “We had a little lack of hitting, but Mira Mesa has a really good pitcher that throws hard. We struggled against the hard-throwing pitchers.”

The good news for the 14U Diamond all-star team is it has one more chance this weekend to capture a tournament title and Mira Mesa will not be in the tournament.

PGSL will travel to Murrieta to compete in the 14th annual Summer Bash.

“We have a good chance because Mira Mesa won’t be there,” joked Vick. “Every time we play them it is a lot of fun, but the girls were happy to hear they won’t be there. It should be a great tournament.”
