Prep football: Alex Spanos All-Star Classic Friday night

By Michael Bower

One of the many great things about the Alex Spanos All-Star Football Classic is it gives some players the chance to strap on their helmets with former teammates one last time before heading off to college.

That will be the case for former Rancho Bernardo High teammates Trent Sessions, Jake Arnell and Zachary Andrews-Worline Friday night in the annual North vs. South classic, which starts at 7 p.m. at Mesa College.

Sessions, who threw for nearly 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns last season for the Broncos, will have the chance to hit his favorite target, Arnell, a few more times before the two go their separate ways. Arnell caught over 78 balls from Sessions last season. The two will play for the North team.

“We have been playing together for a long time,” Sessions said of Arnell. “We have that chemistry. It will be nice to strap it up and play on the field together one last time.”

Sessions is headed to the University of Colorado. The 6-foot, 2-inch quarterback said right now he thinks this will be the final time he steps on a football field as a competitor, but he is still pondering trying to walk-on the football team at Colorado.

“We will see what happens,” he said. “I think this is it, but tryouts are in February.”
