Four are early entrants to Poway City Council election

By Steve Dreyer

The four City Council candidates who in recent months have revealed their plans to run in November took out their official nomination papers this week.

City voters will elect two council members. Councilman Jim Cunningham is running for a second four-year term and took out his papers on Tuesday. Cunningham announced his re-election intentions last October.

Councilwoman Merrilee Boyack is not running for re-election. She has served two terms.

Challengers Steve Vaus and Gary Vineyard took out their papers on Monday, the first day of the official candidate nomination period. Jeff Mangum took out his papers on Tuesday afternoon.

Vaus announced his candidacy on Dec. 12, with Mangum doing the same the following day. Vineyard announced on May 8.

The filing period will close on Aug. 15. The two candidates receiving the most votes in November will fill the two council seats.

Cunningham is a partner in a San Diego labor law practice. Vaus is a business owner and a recording artist. Vineyard owns a pool maintenance company and a barbecue business. Mangum is an attorney and former Poway Unified School District board member.

Just returned to our "City in the Country" after 22 years with my family. Poway has made some nice changes to fit the community in todays times. Although some of the more imperative changes, that affect our youth & families in todays time have yet to be made. We look forward to seeing Steve Vaus in that seat to make those changes.

  7. Jonathan W.

I'm only familiar with one of the candidates myself. Might be because I've seen him out in the community trying to make a difference where it needs it the most. Steve Vaus seems like he cares about this city, and what this city needs.
