Rancho Bernardo cleanup day is Saturday
By Elizabeth Marie Himchak
Rancho Bernardans have a week to get their garages, yards and other spaces spruced up if they want to take advantage of free disposal through a community cleanup.
The event will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at Via del Campo in the Rancho Bernardo Industrial Park. The street’s entrance is accessible from W. Bernardo Drive. The event will be held rain or shine.
Accepted items for recycling or disposal are many that cannot be legally disposed of in the residential curbside trash bins or due to their size cannot fit in the bins used for weekly trash pickup.
Among items that can be brought are household batteries (alkaline, rechargeable, hearing aid and watch), fluorescent lights (CFLs and tubes), appliances, electronics (including televisions, computers and related equipment), lawn mowers (must be free of oil and gasoline), metals, carpeting, junk furniture and mattresses.
As for acceptable lawn debris, this includes wood, yard trimmings and palm fronds. All must be bundled and tied so they do not exceed 50 pounds or six feet in length.
Items that cannot be accepted include dirt, construction or demolition rubble, hazardous wastes (including paint, pesticides, cleaners and motor oil), gas cylinders, propane tanks, needles, syringes and tires. For information on ways to properly dispose of these items, go to www.sandiego.gov/environmental-services or call 858-694-7000.
The free community cleanup is sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council and City of San Diego Environmental Services Department.
