Vaus first to file for Poway City Council

By Steve Dreyer

Steve Vaus on Tuesday became the first candidate for the November City Council election to have his candidacy certified by the city clerk.

STEVE VAUS

Vaus returned his nomination papers, which contained the signatures of 30 city voters who are endorsing his candidacy (20 are required.) Those signatures were verified by City Clerk Linda Troyan.

Potential candidates have until Aug. 15 to complete and return the forms. To date, City Councilman Jim Cunningham, former Poway Unified School District board member Jeff Mangum and local business owner Gary Vineyard have taken out papers.

The four-year terms of Cunningham and Merrilee Boyack expire at the end of the year. Boyack has said she is not running for re-election and has endorsed Vaus.

Vaus led the successful June 2010 effort to recall City Councilwoman Betty Rexford but placed second, behind John Mullin, in the race to replace her on the council.

A 19-year city resident, Vaus is chairman of the city’s Budget Review Committee and is executive director of the Poway Community Leadership Institute, a Boyack-created program that trains volunteers to become civic leaders.

He owns VausMedia, a marketing and creative services company. He also entertains professionally as country singer Buck Howdy and has won a Grammy Award for the best spoken children’s album. He also produces the annual “Carols by Candlelight” concerts in Escondido to raise funds for Rady Children’s Hospital.

We've watched Steve Vaus do so much for this city already, he would make a great Leader on the Council. Glad he's considered running, looking forward to even more of what he has to offer this city.

  2. Betty

    He wont get my vote.

  3. Cowboy Up

Is this the same ( I wont be running for City council ) Steve Vaus? I hadn't even heard of him until he gathered the lynch mob for a good old fashioned hanging. Looks like the former school board member Jeff Magnum will get my vote. He not as wishy washy as Vaus who's never had a lick of political experience.

Hey, thanks for the heads up Cowboy. I've been looking for someone who's never had a lick of political experience. I'll dang sure give him some consideration.
BTW, you get to vote for two. Anybody else you're not recommending?

  5. Not buying it

Can Steve explain why he chose to appear on the radio show of 9-11 truther Alex Jones in 2009 to promote his CD?

    • Tom Yarnall

Not, I am not sure what"9-11 truther Alex Jones" means, but thanks for pointing out that Mr. Vaus worked that day. I was not aware that all economic activities did or should have ceased. When will you be going after Wal-Mart, Target, Von's and the many restaurant and local merchants for staying open?
I have no idea who I will vote for, but am starting to hear irrational comments that could have an impact on my choice.

      • Not buying it

Jones is a far-right conspiracy theorist who claims that the US government planned the 9-11 attacks, among other things.

Feel free to search "Steve Vaus Alex Jones" on Youtube and listen to the entire one-hour interview for yourself.

Hadn't heard that interview before, thanks for pointing it out. My vote may be leaning toward Vaus after hearing it. Great interview

Wishy washy? How so? By organizing a group that demanded the removal of an unethical politician? Or by organizing the Poway Townhall that finally got all parties to the table at one time to listen to parents who had real concerns about their children and drugs (and made real progress on getting help to these families). Despite repeated attempts over the years by others do get this going, he did it. Or by sitting on the budget review committee to make sure that our city money is spent correctly? Or do we want someone like Mangum who caved on the pledge when one person complained their child felt out of place. That seems wishy washy. Mangum will do what is politically expedient.

My votes for Steve Vaus, even those with all the political experience behind them, doesnt mean their good, but here's just a little of what Vaus has done,Two years Chairman Poway Budget Review Committee, leading the fight against substance abuse, Executive Director Poway Community Leadership Institute, honored by the Palomar District PTA with their highest honor this year, endorsed by retiring member Merrilee Boyack etc. The list could go on. I think most people would prefer leadership over "political experience" any day of the week.

  8. Not a fan

Vaus has to many other things going on to give his full attention to the council. He needs to pick a different forum to help keep his music career going.

Political experience or not, when it comes down to it, I'll be voting for Vaus. Regardless of having a music career, I've watched this man do more for our community than those that we voted in previously. We've got someone who shows great compassion for our community spending endless hours in it, this is what our community needs.

  10. Ashley W.

By "to many other things going on" do you mean his tireless work to make this community better? His hours of volunteering at school, his committee work? Because I'm sure that's what you really meant to say.
