4S Ranch man may face felony charges for laser light incident

A 4S Ranch man could be facing felony charges for allegedly pointing a laser light at a sheriff’s department helicopter Tuesday night.

Lt. Todd Richardson on Wednesday said that the “ASTREA” helicopter was flying over 4S Ranch about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when someone on the ground pointed the laser light at the aircraft. The flight crew contacted deputies at the Poway station with the location of the light’s source, the balcony of a residence in the 16000 block of Dove Canyon Road, Richardson said.

“A male subject who matched the description of the subject the ASTREA crew observed” was contacted by deputies, Richardson said, adding  that the case has been submitted to the district attorney’s office “for review and felony charges.”

The spokesman noted that “this type of incident can fully incapacitate an aircraft flight crew causing permanent injury to the pilots and loss of control of the aircraft.”
