50th anniversary time capsule needs items

By Elizabeth Marie Himchak

Is there something you think Rancho Bernardans 50 years from now should know about the community?

Then propose it for the time capsule that will be buried in Webb Park on Sept. 22 as part of Rancho Bernardo’s 50th anniversary festivities.

The anniversary committee is asking locals of all ages to suggest or contribute small items pertaining to the community that would be of historic significance when RB celebrates its centennial in 2062.

“Items should be what RB is like today, like photos or (residents’) writings,” said Marty Judge, the celebration committee’s co-chairman. “We want a mix from different ages, to reflect the makeup of Rancho Bernardo.”

He added, “(contributors should) think in terms of … how and why things are the way they are, the culture of the community that might be lost in 50 years. Explain how we’ve helped each other, for example.”

Judge said the Rancho Bernardo phone book is one item he knows is going into the time capsule because it not only lists many of the community’s residents and businesses, but in its front pages details several community organizations along with other information.

He said the celebration committee will make the final decision on what is included. Those who would like to contribute or suggest something need to contact April Mitchell at 858-451-3406 or april@rbbusinessassociation.com by Thursday, Aug. 16.

The time capsule will be buried in Webb Park at the Pathway of Pride entrance. A large monument stone will be placed on top so the time capsule is well-marked in a public space.

“Time capsules are notorious for being lost,” Judge said. “We figured by putting it in the park … it will not be lost.”

Due to a chemical that will be placed inside when the capsule is closed, Judge said the selected photos and papers are not supposed to deteriorate.

The time capsule has been donated by the Rancho Bernardo Business Association, which is also sponsoring the Sept. 22 community-wide party.

It will be the third known time capsule assembled for Rancho Bernardo. When RB celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2007, one was placed in a local bank vault. It is to be opened in 2050. One was reportedly buried at the Promontory in the Rancho Bernardo Industrial Park overlooking Westwood in 1989. That one is to be opened in 2089.

If you know of any other time capsules buried in Rancho Bernardo over the past 50 years, send the details to rbnews@pomeradonews.com or call 858-218-7211.
