Poway Sheriff’s captain leaving for new assignment

By Steve Dreyer

Poway’s “police chief” is leaving for a new assignment.

Capt. Mike Hernandez

Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Hernandez, assigned to run the Poway station 15 months ago, is leaving to be in charge of the department’s Specialized Investigations Division. His last day in Poway will be Friday, Aug. 10.

The SID is responsible for investigations involving drug cartels, narcotics, gangs, prostitution and border crimes.

Hernandez came to Poway following his promotion. His previous assignment had been with the East County Gang Task Force.

A new Poway captain is expected to be announced shortly, according to City Manager Penny Riley.

The captain assigned to the Poway station also oversees law enforcement efforts in Ramona and 4S Ranch, which are both unincorporated areas of the county.

Since its incorporation in 1980, Poway has contracted with the county for law enforcement services. Representatives from the city and the county are currently negotiating a new five-year contract.
