Prep baseball: Rancho Bernardo High’s Bugg commits to LSU

Louisiana State University was the big winner in the Parker Bugg sweepstakes. The Rancho Bernardo High right-hander recently verbally committed to play for the Division I powerhouse in 2014.

Bugg had interest from several other big-time programs, including Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, Stanford and Florida State. But the 6-foot, 5-inch, 200-pound hurler could not pass up playing for a program that always seems to be in the mix for a national title.

“That was really the main attraction to them,” said Bugg, who throws a fastball in the high 80s and has a solid curveball and changeup. “Every year I watch the College World Series they host a Regional or a Super Regional and in 2009 they won the College World Series. That is something I want to do – win a College World Series.”

LSU has won six national championships. Bugg visited the school in July and committed shortly after. He plans to do whatever is asked of him once he gets to the school.

“I think they are planning on me being with the other guys to see where I fit in,” Bugg said. “Whether it is a reliever or midweek starter or whatever they need me to do I am going to do it.”

It is too early to know the 2013 MLB Draft potential of Bugg. Should he be selected in the draft, he would have to choose between attending LSU or starting a professional career.

“To be honest, I haven’t thought that far ahead,” he said. “I would definitely have to see if and where I am drafted. I would have to improve a lot between now and the season to be drafted high enough where I would not go to LSU.”

Bugg tossed 58-plus innings for the Broncos last season and posted a 2.28 ERA while striking out 49 batters. He recently pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers in the Area Code Games, striking out four batters in two innings of work on Tuesday.
