Poway Days Parade deadline extended, sponsors sought
By Emily Sorensen
Though the start of the 50th annual Poway Days celebrations is fast approaching, there’s still time to contribute to the Poway Days Parade, which is being held 9 – 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, with a community food-packing event following it.
The Poway Days Parade committee has decided to extend the deadline for entries until Friday, Aug. 31, as they are still seeking Powegians to join the parade. Alexis Belway, who is in charge of operations for the Poway Days Parade with the Poway Community Association, said they were especially looking for entertaining acts, but also anyone who wishes to participate. “This is really an incredible opportunity for any Powegian,” said Belway. Registration has been made easier this year, as interested participants can go online to the parade’s website and register through an online form.
Belway also said the parade is still looking for sponsors and monetary donations. “There is really a need to help us financially with the parade,” said Belway. “People don’t understand the costs with putting on a parade. Everything costs money. The grandstands cost money, the Porta-Potties cost money, the trash cans cost money.” While numerous sponsorship levels are available, with a variety of associated perks, including seats in the special sponsors grandstand, you can also donate directly to the parade fund through the PayPal button on the parade website.
The Poway Days food-packing event, sponsored by the Friends and Family Community Connection, is going ahead as planned, with a few small changes. The location of the event has been moved to the back Wal-Mart parking lot, 13425 Community Road, Poway, and will be taking place 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. A high school student pack-off competition will be held between 2 – 3 p.m. The food-packing event is free and open to the public.
The FFCC said they are hoping to pack 200,000 meals at the event, so volunteers should bring their energy and monetary donations for the purchase of more food. Each meal costs 25 cents, so a $20 donation can buy 80 meals. The packed meals will be used to relieve hunger in San Diego and in Tanzania.
Volunteers are also being asked to bring over-the-counter medications to donate to the FFCC’s medical trip to Haiti in November. A complete list is available on the FFCC website, but requested medications include topical antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and vitamins. Poway Days is being celebrated through a number of events in September, which are proceeding well in their planning. In addition to the parade and food packing event, there is also Good Neighbor Day on Wednesday, Sept. 12, Rendezvous in the Park Thursday, Sept. 13 – Sunday, Sept. 16, the Poway Days Trail Ride and the Poway Days Festival and Street Fair on Sunday, Sept. 16, a Grand Ol’ Opry-style performance of “Oh Berkeley Where Hart Thou?” at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, the 40th annual Poway Rodeo Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29, and the 27th annual Tour de Poway bike ride Sunday, Sept. 30.
You can also celebrate Poway Days by enjoying a performance of the musical comedy “Cowgirls” at PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, running weekends Friday, Aug. 24 – Sunday, Sept. 30.
