Prep Football: Eight Players to Watch

Derek Babiash

Derek Babiash (DB/WR/KR), Poway

The Arizona-bound, shutdown corner is one of the top athletes in the county. A 6-1, 171 pound  senior speedster, Babiash is always a threat to reach the end zone. He broke the school record last year with 10 interceptions, including three in the section title game.

Alec Moreno

Alec Moreno (LB/TE), Poway

The 6-2, 226 pound Moreno can deliver  the punishment on defense and is a huge target on offense. The ferocious senior recently committed to Nevada and was named to the ESPN Cal-Hi Sports All-State Defense Third-Team.

Patrick Zeller

Patrick Zeller (RB/WR), Del Norte

The 6-foot, 190 pound junior is a workhorse. Zeller had over 1,000 yards rushing and over 250 yards receiving last year. He should be the biggest threat for the Nighthawks again this season, as the team looks to have a breakout year.

George Liang

George Liang (LB/FB), Del Norte

The 6-foot, 215 pound senior has garnered interest from several Ivy League schools. A two-time All-Valley League player, Liang is a key piece to the highly-experienced Del Norte defense.

Ivy Adair

Ivy Adair (RB), Rancho Bernardo

Adair did an outstanding job keeping the Broncos’ running game alive when starter Glenn Paggett went down with an injury last year. Adair proved he can be the feature back, averaging over four yards per carry in the final five regular season games.

Charles Ensley

Charles Ensley (WR), Rancho Bernardo

The 6-foot, senior returns as the team’s go-to receiver. Ensley made the switch from QB to WR last year and excelled, catching 45 balls for 592 yards and seven TDs. He has the speed to get behind defenders and make the big play.

Jake Kirby

Jake Kirby (QB/S), Maranatha Christian

The do-it-all QB ran for 15 TDs and threw for another 17 while leading the Eagles to the 8-man mythical section title last year. The 6-2, highly-efficient passer should help make the transition to 11-man football an easy one for the Eagles.

Josiah Rubia

Josiah Rubia (LB), Maranatha Christian

The junior with an extremely high motor and nose for the ball will lead the Eagles’ defense this season. Rubia averaged more than 11 tackles per game last year and recorded a whopping 18 in a game against Ocean View Christian.
