Chamber mixer kicks off annual Poway Days fun

By Emily Sorensen

The Poway Chamber of Commerce is hosting a free “Poway Days Kickoff Mixer,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Old Poway Park.

The mixer, which is open to the public, is not only intended to bring the community together but to celebrate the beginning of Poway Days.

The chamber’s mixer event will begin with a color guard ceremony featuring a Boy Scout troop at Veterans Park, followed by a short speech and ribbon-cutting ceremony by Deputy Mayor Jim Cunningham to officially begin Poway Days. The mixer will feature wandering entertainment provided by the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, as well as a military band. Food will be provided by the Hamburger Factory.

There will also be a beer and wine garden at the mixer, so feel free to indulge a little as you mingle with the community.

There will also be booths by Poway Days community partners, including the Poway Valley Riders Association, the Poway Community Association, the Boys and Girls Club, the City of Poway, Soroptomist International of Poway, Kiwanis, RB Sunrise Rotary, Poway Rotary, the Poway Center for Performing Arts, Crystal Gardens, and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, where you can learn more about the upcoming Poway Days events in September.

Parking will be available at the Temple Street lot, across from the Hamburger Factory.

Poway Days will celebrate its first weekend beginning Saturday, Sept. 8 with the Poway Days Parade, 9 – 11 a.m. between Pomerado and Bowron Roads. Following the parade will be the Friends & Family Community Connection’s food-packing event, where volunteers will pack 200,000 meals for the needy both here in San Diego and worldwide, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., in the back Wal-Mart shopping center parking lot in Poway.

Also being held after the parade, in the front parking lot of Wal-Mart, is the “Wellness Madness” health and wellness expo, sponsored by Poway Wal-Mart and Soroptimist International of Poway, in partnership with LifeStyles INFOCUS. Held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., the event is free and will include free food tastings, health screening and more.

The 125-year-old chapel of the Community Church of Poway will also open for tours to celebrate Poway Days from 1 – 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, and again 1 – 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. Stop in and hear about the history of the chapel for free.

It’s also deadline time for both parade entries and parade sponsorships. The official extended deadline for both entries and sponsorships is Friday, Aug. 31, so any last minute desires to be in the parade, or support it, need to be in by tomorrow.

The Poway Community Association, who head up the parade planning and execution, have made signing up to enter or donate, or become a sponsor, easier than ever this year by providing forms directly on the website. There’s no need to get out your checkbook and drive anywhere, just click and submit. Forms and information can be found online at powayca.org.
