Poway couple celebrates 70 years of marriage

Poway residents Wayne and Evelyn Mullin, are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary today (Aug. 30)

Wayne and Evelyn Mullin are celebrating 70 years of marriage.

They are both native Californians, born and raised in the Roseville area, near Sacramento and were high school sweethearts at Roseville High.

After their marriage in August of 1942, Wayne served in the Navy during World War II. He then held a number of jobs throughout Northern California, as a salesman and then as a drywall finisher. They moved to Orange County in 1954 and to San Diego in 1957.

In 1960, Wayne started Mullin & Mitchell, Inc., a paint and drywall company which eventually became one of the largest in Southern California. He also formed a partnership to build apartments in 1965, and in 1972 founded a home building company. He retired in 1980, but still spends his time following the financial markets.

Wayne and Evelyn have five children, 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. After moving to Rancho Bernardo in 1995 to be nearer to family, they relocated to The Gateway in Poway in 2009.

In June, over 75 attended their “Milestone Party” to commemorate their anniversary as well as their 90th birthdays. Friends and family of four generations shared in the celebration.

My compliments on such a phenomenal achievement. I'll just bet you both have a good sense about knowing when to compromise, knowing when to give in and knowing when to stand firm. I will further bet your theme song comes from the philosophy of Kenny Rogers. "You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run".
With the divorce rate near 50%, you are truly exceptional.

It is an achievement to be proud of. Not just in the success of a long last marriage but also in the fact that this family commitment has been passed down through their children. While I have banged heads politically with some of them, I have always admired the obvious love and support this family has for one another. True success in life is never measured by business success but by success in the home. Congratulations. We should all be so blessed.
