Prep Football: Del Norte High hangs on to beat Rancho Buena Vista

The Del Norte High football team built a 20-0 lead and then held on for a 20-15 victory over host Rancho Buena Vista Friday night in both teams’ season opener.

It was the first road victory and season-opening win in the three-year varsity history of the Nighthawks’ program. George Liang had 10 carries for 138 yards and scored on runs of 38 and 70 yards to help Del Norte go up 20-0 at the break.

Rancho Buena Vista closed to within 20-14 when Jake Stone hauled in a 43-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Harris with 3:47 to play. The Longhorns’ defense held for three plays, but Nighthawks’ coach Leigh Cole ordered the QB sneak on fourth-and-2 and Del Norte got the first down to nail down the victory.
