Prep Football: Poway High crushes Scripps Ranch 42-7

The Poway High football team picked up right where it left off last season – playing smothering defense and lighting up the scoreboard early and often.

The defending CIF San Diego Section Division I champion Titans scored five touchdowns in the first half and led 35-0 at the break before rolling to a 42-7 victory over host Scripps Ranch Friday night in both schools’ season opener.

Arizona-bound Derek Babiash had two interceptions and TD receptions of 63 and 77 yards from Max Washam. The ground attack was running smooth, as Lance Mudd and Nehemiah Gross combined for four touchdowns.

Mudd opened the fireworks show with a 44-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. His other score would be from 12 yards out. Gross busted loose for a touchdown runs of 61 and 71 yards.

It was Poway’s second straight year with a season-opening victory and its 14th straight win dating back to last season. The only thing keeping the Titans from a perfect season a year ago was a Week 4 tie to San Pasqual. The last time the Titans lost was Nov. 26, 2010, when Vista took them down 37-7 in the second round of the playoffs.
