Prep Football: San Pasqual Academy runs over Maranatha Christian
The Maranatha Christian Schools football team is coming off a brilliant 8-man Sunset League championship season. But the Eagles found out quickly just how much tougher the competition is going to be at the 11-man level.
Maranatha allowed 465 yards rushing in the game and three touchdowns in only seven plays run by San Pasqual Academy in the fourth quarter, as the visiting Dragons pulled away from the Eagles for a 44-14 victory Friday in both schools’ season opener.
The Dragons’ Gay finished with 226 yards and four touchdowns, including a dazzling 99 yard jaunt which put San Pasqual Academy up 35-14 with 6:05 to go. The Dragons’ Sagon Penn also eclipsed the century mark, finishing with 123 yards. He had touchdown runs of 74 and 41 yards – both in the second half.
The Eagles were sloppy on offense, fumbling seven times and losing three of them. Maranatha quarterback Jake Kirby started slow, but picked it up in the second half. He would finish with 234 yard passing with one touchdown and one interception.
Maranatha trailed just 7-0 at the break, but went down 14-0 after Gay scored on a 36-yard run with 9:27 left in the third quarter. Kirby’s 2-yard run with 1:43 to go in the quarter pulled the Eagles to within 14-7, but just 16 seconds later Penn busted loose for a 74-yard score for the Dragons.
The Eagles pulled within 22-14 on Kirby’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Michael Trent on fourth down with 9:36 left in the game. But once again Penn answered for the Dragons, racing in from 41 yards out. The Dragons would score two more unanswered touchdowns to pull away.
Jake Olmstead led all receivers, hauling in nine balls for 114 yards. Michael Trent added three catches for 84 yards for the Eagles (0-1).
