Phyllis Pfeiffer has been named publisher of the Rancho Bernardo & 4S Ranch News Journal  and the Poway News Chieftain, replacing Jeff Mitchell who is assuming the publisher role of the Santa Cruz Good Times.

At the same time, Debbie Keller, advertising director of both local newspapers, has been promoted to general manager and will be responsible for day-to-day management of the business operations.

Anthony Allegretti, president and CEO of MainStreet Media, the parent company of the News Journal and News Chieftain, made the announcement.

Steve Dreyer continues as editor of both newspapers and will report to Pfeiffer, as will Keller.

“Jeff Mitchell has done an outstanding job with our inland papers,” said Allegretti. “He has assembled an excellent staff and therefore we are able to consolidate senior management in San Diego because of the high quality of management, writers, sales consultants and graphic designers at our Poway office. The Good Times, one of the country’s premier alternative weeklies, offers Jeff and his wife, Anna, an opportunity to return to their roots in Northern California,” added Allegretti.

Since 2008 Pfeiffer has been group publisher of the coastal division of MainStreet, including the La Jolla Light, Rancho Santa Fe Review, Del Mar Times, Solana Beach Sun and Carmel Valley News.

“She has been instrumental in improving the editorial quality and financial stability of these publications,” said Allegretti.

In her expanded roll she will add the News Journal, News Chieftain and the Ramona Sentinel to her area of responsibility.

A graduate of Cornell University, Pfeiffer started her newspaper career at the La Jolla Light and served as its publisher from 1978 to 1987. She then became general manager of the San Diego County edition of the Los Angeles Times until the Times closed its San Diego operation at the end of 1992. The Pfeiffers then headed north to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she served as president and publisher of the Marin Independent Journal and then senior vice president for the San Francisco Chronicle. Pfeiffer returned to San Diego and weekly newspapers in 2008.

Keller, who resides in Rancho Bernardo, has been an advertising executive with several publications in San Diego County prior to joining the MainStreet Media’s Poway office, including eight years as advertising manager at the San Diego Union-Tribune. She also worked for PennySaver, ADVO and Get1Free.

“Debbie has demonstrated her leadership within the newspaper and the community and is an asset to our publications” said Pfeiffer. “I will be relying heavily on Debbie and Steve Dreyer, who has been editor here for nearly 20 years.”
