Recycle Rally to benefit Honduran school
By Emily Sorensen
Country Montessori School, located in Poway, is holding its third annual Recycle Rally beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and running though the end of November.
All proceeds of the rally will directly benefit Country Montessori’s sister school, Gilberto Pineda Madrid School, located in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, which has over 800 students. Country Montessori works with the nonprofit organization Global School Relief to reach out to and support its sister school.
Country Montessori School is a private Montessori school that has been in operation since 1989 and takes students in preschool to fifth grade from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos. It follows the Maria Montessori philosophy on what she called “Cosmic Education,” which helps the child see how he or she relates to the whole of the universe which, in turn, helps the child become a responsible and caring citizen.
This year, Country Montessori hopes to raise $2,000 to put a new roof on the Honduran school’s kindergarten classroom, repair damage from mold, buy chairs for the teachers, and purchase as many school supplies as they can with what is left over. In the two previous years, Country Montessori has used funds raised from the Recycle Rallies to pay for an Internet connection for the school, buy school supplies, repair mold-damaged ceiling tiles, buy nine desks for the teachers and 50 desk/chair combinations for the students, and purchased ceiling fans for the classrooms.
“What we really want to highlight is how these schools benefit,” said Tammy Nickel, Country Montessori School’s global community outreach coordinator. “This money goes to such good use. It does a lot of good.” Nickel also said that as none of the teachers at Gilberto Pineda Madrid School are paid, the influx of outside help has helped to revitalize the teachers, students and parents of the school. “Many of the kids [at Gilberto Pineda Madrid School] are the poorest of the poor and live in shacks,” said Nickel. “The families know education is their way out to a better life.”
Country Montessori and Global School Relief also work to benefit the community of San Pedro Sula by buying as many of their donated items and services in the local community as possible, in order to stimulate the town’s economy. They also have an Spanish Internet Pen Pal (SIPP) program, an interactive and academic program that allows the Country Montessori students to communicate and learn from their sister school’s students.
While the students of Country Montessori will be recycling up a storm, Nickel asked that any outside party who wants to help with the fundraising not bring any recyclables, as the school cannot handle them. Instead, Country Montessori will accept monetary donations, 100 percent of which will go to Gilberto Pineda Madrid School.
Interested donors can mail checks to Country Montessori School, or stop by the office 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Country Montessori school is located at 12642 Monte Vista Road. For more information, call 858-673-1756.
