“It is the best job. Everything I do makes someone happy,” said Mikkelson, a Poway resident for 20 years, who fittingly named her business “Face It. Lash It. Wax It.”
Mikkelson offers her services as an independent contractor working at Twin Scissors, the decades-old Poway salon located at 13412 Pomerado Road. She has been practicing there since March and previously was a longtime client herself.
Instead of a set salon menu for facials, she customizes each facial for every client. Mikkelson talks to clients about their skin needs and what they want to achieve with the facial.
“A lot of times people will ask for something they think they want, but it’s not really the best thing for them. For me, I just customize every facial to the client I’m seeing,” Mikkelson said.
She has clients fill out a form and talk about their skin issues and concerns to outline a treatment plan, including addressing home care so clients leave the salon knowing how to take care of their skin.
“It’s more informative for me and it’s educational for them when we can talk more deeply about what their skin desires are,” she continued.
She does a lot of facials that target anti-aging for adults and acne treatment for teens. Products used in the salon include Tu’el and Glo Therapies, which Mikkelson also offers for purchase.
For skincare, she also does microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and newer technologies for anti-aging such as LED.
Head-to-toe waxing is available for women and men. She prefers using Berodin hard wax as it doesn’t stick to skin, grabs hair easily, and is gentle on the skin. While women are the majority of waxing clients, ear and nostril waxing is a popular service for men, she said.
Mikkelson has been a licensed esthetician since 1984 and got her start in the beauty business doing department store makeovers. She has been doing eyelash extensions for over five years.
Mikkelson enjoys doing eyelash extensions because they make lashes look longer, fuller, and thicker without mascara. This is especially good for those with light lashes, or have thinning as is common with older women. The process involves gluing individual lashes to existing lashes using medical grade glue and lasts approximately three weeks.
“You wake up every day with nice lashes,” she said. “It’s really nice for women who don’t like to wear makeup but feel like they need a little something. It’s just an easy way for them to have a little attention to their eyes without having to do anything.”
Mikkelson likes to offer clients a relaxing experience in a clean environment, and personal service is important — she gives clients her cell phone number if they have follow-up questions.
During the month of October, she will be donating 10 percent of profits to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month.
Mikkelson is available Mondays through Saturdays by appointment. Set up an appointment by calling her at 858-829-1316.
