Prep Football: Ketteringham’s three TD tosses lift Westview High over Del Norte
By Michael Bower
The Del Norte High football team certainly did not want to enter Valley League play this way.
The Nighthawks gave up 28 unanswered points in the second quarter and never got going in a 35-13 loss to Westview Friday, as the Wolverines looked impressive on their homecoming night.
Sophomore quarterback Nate Ketteringham threw for three touchdowns – two to Cody Williams in the second quarter — and showed off his wheels on a 44-yard run for a score late in the fourth quarter.
The Nighthawks, which will open Valley League play at defending champion Valley Center next week, turned the ball over twice, punted twice and turned it over once on downs in their five first-half offensive possessions.
Del Norte brought up junior varsity quarterback Parker Lappin, a sophomore, to start the game since usual starter Isaiah McDonald is out with a broken collarbone. Lappin missed on his first six passing attempts, but after that he completed 8 of 14 for 126 yards. He scored his first career TD on a 15-yard run with 4:30 to go in the third quarter.
The Nighthawks’ Mark Gallant cut the deficit to 28-13 with 4:14 to go with a 73-yard burst up the sideline. But Ketteringham answered just 18 seconds later with a 44-yard, game-clinching touchdown run.
Ketteringham, who at one point completed eight straight passes, finished with 166 yards and no interceptions. Nathan MacGilfrey, who scored on a 37-yard run to make it 7-0 early in the second quarter, hauled in an 11-yard TD pass from Ketteringham a minute later to make it 14-0.
Williams finished with five catches for 94 yards and had TD receptions of 5 and 23 yards for the Wolverines (4-1). Del Norte (2-3) running back George Liang had 114 yards on 12 carries.
